2019
Transitional Repetition features moments of transition captured in a series of repeating loops, explored through an improvised score composed in real-time to the visuals by trumpeter Glen Whitehead.

I made Transitional Repetition in 2019 while enrolled in UCC's 'MA in Experimental Sound Practice', in collaboration with Glen Whitehead who I directed to compose the improvised score. It is a follow-up of sorts to my film Forestscape in which I also explored working with improvising musicians. I directed Glen to perform 2 improvisations based on my musical concept of the piece, the first recording in which Glen had never seen the visuals before and then again after the initial recording. The two recordings were then mixed to produce the final score.

The sync sound recorded by the camera was not played for Glen during the improvisations. The resulting soundtrack is made up of these sync sounds combined with the musical score.

Visuals shot out of the windows of various vehicles during a weekend trip from Cork to Dublin. Music recorded in UCC's music building.
