FORESTSCAPE

OFFICIALSELECTION-IndieCorkFilmFestival-

An exploration of a forest and its textures, through visuals edited according to random chance procedures and an improvised score composed in real-time to the images.

I made Forestscape in 2019 while enrolled in UCC's 'MA in Experimental Sound Practice', in collaboration with Longleash trio. I directed each member of the trio to individually compose an improvised score in real-time while watching the visual track. Each member performed 2 improvisations, the first having never seen the visual track before and then again a secodn time. Finally I combined the recordings into the audio track heard in the film. The visual track acted as both a graphic score, where the textures of the forest could be interpreted by the musicians, as well as a conductor that shaped and guided the rhythm, timing and structure of the improvisation. The visuals were edited according to instructions given from an original patch I made with Max/MSP that randomly determined the order and placement of the shots.

Shot in the forest surrounding my home in Coolavokig, Ireland. Music recorded in UCC's music building.

Officially selected for screening at IndieCork Film Festival 2020.
