[sync] I & [sync] II

2021 Laurels 1.png

[sync] I & [sync] II are 2 films made from the same audiovisual material that explore the concepts of sound/image synchronisation and ‘chance-based audiovisual interaction’, while maintaining equality and independence between the films’ sounds and images.

They were made as part of my PhD in Composition in University College Cork. My research is focused on the development of an approach to experimental filmmaking in which sounds and images are treated as equal and independent elements. I often employ chance-operations in the editing process and allow things such as shot order and durations to be randomly determined, having been inspired by the work of experimental musicians such as John Cage.

The films are made from 40 shots of varying lengths filmed with synchronised sound, all taken on the same day at morning and night. [sync] I features 2 audiovisual tracks playing simultaneously, both of which either play only sound or only visuals at any time. This results not only in overlapping sounds and images but also in sounds without images and images without sound. [sync] II is made up of 2 different orderings of the material, with audio and visual tracks swapped. The order of sounds and images in both films was randomly determined, allowing for the interaction between sounds and visuals to be chance based.

Recorded and edited in Dublin, Ireland, in May 2021.

Both films were selected for screening at the 2021 IndieCork Film Festival as part of a Special Programme of my experimental film work.
