COLLISION – OVERLAP – FORMATION

CollisionOverlap, and Formation are a trio of films made as one experimental project exploring the emergence of new sounds and images arising from different methods of combining material. Across 3 soundscapes of noise, drones, and ambience, and 3 imagescapes of chaos, symmetry, and abstraction, the film serves as a meditation on ausio/visual structure and form.

________

In early 2021, I made 3 audio-only pieces and 3 visual-only pieces, all sharing the same 2-minute duration. I approached them as standalone pieces, with the only point of connection being that in each piece I wanted to explore different methods of combining audio/visual materials in ways that would seem to allow new material to emerge. After completing the audio and visual pieces, I used a chance-based process to pair them randomly, resulting in the 3 films Collision, Overlap, and Formation.

These can be viewed as separate films or experienced together in one sequence, which is how it was presented at CineSalon in September 2023. Overlap premiered in its standalone form at the 2022 Bloomsday Film Festival.

Overlap (2021, 3 minutes): 'In this immersive experimental short, a quiet street at night and a droning sonic collage are put under the spotlight, offering an invitation for an audiovisual experience of meditative contemplation.'

It was made as part of my creative practice-based PhD research in University College Cork. My research is focused on the development of an approach to experimental filmmaking in which sounds and images are treated as equal and independent elements. I often employ chance-operations in the editing process and allow things such as shot order and durations to be randomly determined, having been inspired by the work of experimental musicians such as John Cage.
