DICE ROLL

Dice Roll (2021, 5 minutes): 'A presentation of two independently made pieces, one audio and one video, both of which explore compositional approaches that allow creative decisions to be made by the rolling of dice. As the viewer-listener is invited to immerse themselves in an audiovisual space of texture, movement and abstraction, the line between random chance and personal intention is questioned and blurred.'

This film was made as part of my PhD in Composition in University College Cork. My research is focused on the development of an approach to experimental filmmaking in which sounds and images are treated as equal and independent elements. I often employ chance-operations in the editing process and allow things such as shot order and durations to be randomly determined, having been inspired by the work of experimental musicians such as John Cage.

Recorded and edited in Cork, Ireland, in April 2021.

Dice Roll was selected to be screened as part of 'art(ist)FILM 2022' a curated programme taking place in the Rory Gallagher Theatre in MTU Bishopstown, a partnership between MTU Arts Office and IndieCork Film Festival.
